Alumni Leadership Award - 2012.jpg) E. Niel Carey '56
Niel Carey's involvement with Salisbury University has
occurred in a variety of capacities since he graduated in 1956. He has been
President of the Salisbury University Alumni Board of Directors, a member of
the SU Foundation Board of Directors, member of the Edward H. Nabb Research
Center Board of Directors and was co-chair of the Teacher Education and
Technology Center portion of the Taking Excellence to New Heights Capital
Campaign 2012. Salisbury University has benefitted from Niel's energy and
experience throughout his tenure on various boards and committees.
The Carey family has had a history of philanthropy with
Salisbury University and throughout the state of Maryland. In 2006 Niel and his
wife Helen endowed The Carey-Simmons Education Scholarship Program. This
scholarship pays tribute to Niel's profession and encourages others to go into
the field of education. As an endowed fund, the Carey's philanthropic spirit
will be felt for generations to come. |

Nomination Criteria:
Young Alumni Achievement Award
This award is presented to a Salisbury alumnus/a who has graduated within the past 10-15 years in recognition of a commitment to excellence in post-collegiate life and a significant or ongoing commitment to extraordinary work, research or volunteerism.
The SU Alumni Association will present a minimum of one award per year.
This award recipient will be chosen based on a combination of the following criteria:
1. High levels of achievement early in one's chosen career or profession.
2. Demonstrated leadership capability.
3. An assemblage of skills that would demonstrate one's potential for leadership and distinction in the long term.
4. Substantial indications of a commitment to the service of others.
It is expected that the recipient of this award will be present to accept during winter commencement.
Alumni Leadership Award (formerly Alumni Service Award)
This award is presented to a Salisbury alumnus/a who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, dedication and service to the University and/or Alumni Association.
The SU Alumni Association will present a maximum of one award per year.
This award recipient will be chosen based on a combination of the following criteria:
1. Participation in the life of Salisbury University through personal involvement on leadership committees, association with the student body and engagement of fellow alumni.
2. Selfless commitment of time and talent has been augmented by their willingness to enhance the financial welfare of the University.
It is expected that the recipient of this award will be present to accept during winter commencement.
Lifetime Achievement Award
This award is presented to an alumnus/a who has demonstrated long-term success in his or her career and who exemplifies the attributes of an Salisbury University graduate, such as leadership, citizenship, community service and/or service to his or her business or industry.
The SU Alumni Association will present a maximum of one award per year.
It is expected that the recipient of this award will be present to accept during winter commencement.
Service to Society Award
This award is presented to an alumnus/a who has demonstrated a contribution of service made for the betterment of society, either in a professional or volunteer capacity.
The SU Alumni Association will present a maximum of one award per year.
This award recipient will be chosen based on a combination of the following criteria:
1. Selfless commitment of time and energy in giving back to their community or service organization.
2. Engage in the creation, organization, and/or mobilization of volunteers, groups and resources that are involved in projects benefiting the greater community.
3. Demonstrate sustained commitment to meeting community needs.
4. Utilize unique and creative approaches to meeting needs.
5. Develop and foster the virtues and skills of civic engagement and social responsibility.
It is expected that the recipient of this award will be present to accept during winter commencement.
